Abstract

The stratigraphicai sequence of Poirino Plateau has been reconstructed by assembling both geologic and hydrogeologic data. To distinguish the geological units, Authors referred to the "Villafranchiano" units, defined in the type-area of Villafranca d'Asti (Carraro, 1996). In particular geometry, lithology and fossil content of every geological unit, as well as the trend of main erosion surfaces have been assessed. The lithostratigraphic setting, together with the evaluation of hydraulic properties has allowed the description of the aquifer system. Groundwater flow and quality have been evaluated for both unconfined aquifer and the multiiayered aquifer system. The multiiayered aquifer system, represented by both marine and "Villafranchian" deposits, is an important source of drinking water for the region and results quite well isolated by surface pollution.
