Abstract
Salciarini D.& Conversini P.: Dynamic analysis of debris flows in the Terria watershed, (Umbria Apennines, central Italy). IT
ISSN 0394-3356, 2008).
The paper presents the study of two debris flow events occurred in June and August 2005 in a small watershed located in the eastern
Umbria region of central Italy. Brief, intense convective storm precipitations were the main cause for these processes that flowed for
more than 2 km along the drainage network. In this paper, after introducing the topographical and hydrological analyses, we present
the application of a commercial numerical model to simulate the propagation and the depositional phase of the events. The model is
able to simulate the mobilized volume flow and the expansion areas. Although conceptual, the model has implications for the design
and effectiveness of various mitigation measures, as check dams for the flow speed reduction and erosion control. In particular, this
paper presents a procedure constituted of two phases: in the first one, we describe the data collection and elaboration, and the analyses simulating the original condition of the basin before the events occurrences. In the second phase we describe the results obtained from the simulations considering the modified conditions after the countermeasures installations.
