Abstract
The Liguria Region-Civil Defence Dept. ("Servizio Difesa del suolo"), has recently started a research programme in various areas as identified in the Soil Protection law ("Difesa dei suolo"). This paper reports on the results of the programme applied to the Torrent Prino area. The results obtained are primarily graphical representations (maps). The maps, which are subdivided into "basins", are homogeneous and simple to read, and, above all, give up-to-date precise information about situations of both general and punctual "risk". This type of information can be used to prevent disasters, giving also vital help to coordinate rescue and first aid operations in the case of disaster. One of the most important goals of the research has been to identify and map all risk areas. These maps can also be used for planning and organizing preventive operations of land reclamation. It is important to note that the maps are not meant to have the value of an actual "project". The maps produced are subdivided into three groups: "Basic Thematic Maps", "Derived Risk Maps", and "Synthesis Maps". The subdivision of the areas into classes of risk (from the lowest to the highest) is the main characteristic of the Risk Maps. Synthesis Maps have been obtained from data provided in the Basic and in the Risk Maps, and from information derived from other sources. Synthesis Maps, which form the main part of the plan, have practical purposes: they give synthetic items of information; they can easily be used in the field; they are simple to read and are suitable for non-specialists; they give references to go back to the proper Risk or Basic maps for immediate and emergency analyses and resolutions.
