Abstract

The paper reports on superficial landslides triggered by exceptional meteorological events using as an example the hydrological characters of the events that damaged the Savona and Genoa territories in Liguria on September 22 and 27, 1992. The areal distribution of superficial landslides (soil slips and earth flows), is considered in relation to substratum lithology and soil use. Particular attention is paid to the bearing of heavy and persistent rains as triggers for such phenomena. The important (even if local) morphogenic action of superficial landslides expanding over a territory in a short time and contributing to the remodelling of slopes through mobilization and redistribution of superficial terraines is discussed.
