Caratterizzazione strutturale del rilievo del M. Massico nell'ambito dell'evoluzione quaternaria delle depressioni costiere dei fiumi Garigliano e Volturno (Campania settentrionale)

Abstract
The paper reports the results of a structural and geological study of the Mount Massico area in northern Campania carried out to define its recent tectonic evolution. The deformations of the Meso-Cenozoic marine successions and the volcanic deposits of Middle-Late Pleistocene are examined. The results of the structural analysis and data from the geological and geophysical literature indicate that the area has been subjected to predominant extensional mechanisms along NE-SW trending faults since, probably, the Early-Middle Pleistocene. Evidence of sinkhole structures and sunk Roman ruins (subsidence occurred in the last 10 ka) would suggest a recent probably historic tectonic activity along the NE-trending southeastern margin of Mt. Massico.
