Abstract

Quaternary folding and brittle deformations of subaerial slope deposits in the northern part of the Agri Valley (Basilicata, southern Italy) have been studied through meso-and morpho-structural analyses. The new field data are supported by a geoelectrical tomography that shows the presence of a resistive body at shallow depth. The shape of the body and the resistivity values at its boundaries suggest the existence of a push up structure buried by deformed Quaternary breccias. The results indicate that the area underwent both transpressional and transtensional tectonics during Pleistocene times. On this basis, the valley appears to be a more complex structure than a simple extensional graben, as traditionally assumed in the literature
