Segnalazione di scarpate di faglia tardo-pleistoceniche sui Monti della Magnola (Massiccio del Velino - Abruzzo)

Abstract

Some fault scarps affecting both late-glacial till deposits and cretaceous limestones have been recognized on the north-eastern slope of the Magnola Mount. The chronology of the regional late-Pleistocene glacial phases allowed to date approximately the till deposits and therefore the last activity of the faults that caused the formation of the described scarps. The last fault activity was probably coseismic and took place during the middle portion of the period between 16,000 and 13,300 years ago. Some other faults, active during Late Glacial and Holocene periods, are known in the M. Velino - M. Magnola area: this area has to be considered tectonically very active even if no strong earthquake sources have been localized there during the last millennium.
