Abstract

The Geological Office of the Municipality of Genoa in Liguria (northern Italy) was founded in 1985. This paper reports on the experience gained in these years as an example of "geological culture" and of the role played by geologists in a Public Administration. The Office, initially dedicated to examining projects dealing with "Hydrogeologic Restrictions" of the Regional Law no. 22/84, has so enlarged its tasks and personnel in the last ten years as to partecipate in various land planning and use and public works projects of the Genoa Municipality. Collaboration with Civil Defence structures has involved the Office in prevention activities related to geological and hydrogeological hazards. The Office cooperation with the Civil Defense was particularly evident during the floods of autumn 1991 and 1992.
